We achieve our foundation’s objectives by drawing on our collective leadership and award-winning competencies in multiple fields including digital art, design, education, media, policy, research, science and technology, and expertise in the academic, business and non-profit sectors.

    THE FOUNDATION TEAM
 

IDIT HAREL CAPERTON, FOUNDER AND PRESIDENT
Dr. Caperton is a pioneer in the utilization of new-media technology for promoting creative learning, democracy and globalization through Constructionist Learning theory. She founded the World Wide Workshop for Children’s Media Technology & Learning in 2004 to leverage her unique blend of award-winning research, business acumen and leadership in new-media projects around the world. Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, Dr. Caperton conducted breakthrough research as a Research Scientist at the MIT Media Lab. Her book "Children Designers" received the 1991 Outstanding Book Award by the American Education Research Association (AERA). In 1995, she implemented her research when she founded MaMaMedia Inc. and launched MaMaMedia.com, ConnectedFamily.com, and Papert.org. Dr. Caperton and MaMaMedia established global partnerships, and won numerous honors, including the Computerworld Smithsonian Award for visionary use of information technology in education (1999); the Internet industry's coveted Global Information Infrastructure Award as the website that has most empowered, entertained, and educated kids (1999); and the 21st-Century Achievement Award from the Computerworld Honors Program for "visionary use of information technology" through the MaMaMedia Peace Project (2002). Dr. Caperton was honored by the Network of Educators in Science and Technology and MIT in 2002 "for devotion, innovation, and imagination in science and technology on behalf of children and youth around the world.” She holds a BA from Tel Aviv University (1982), EdM and CAS from Harvard University (1984 and 1985), and a PhD from MIT Media Lab (1988). SHANNON SULLIVAN: PROGRAM DIRECTOR, EXECUTIVE PRODUCER
As Program Director, Shannon launched the Globaloria program and its first pilot project, MyGLife.org, in 2006. She continues to expand this program and develop new web-based learning programs, including MaMaMedia.org -- a joint venture with One Laptop Per Child. As Executive Producer, Shannon defines the content offerings and learning materials for the Foundation's online programs, sets the editorial tone, and leads the production team. For 13+ years, Shannon has been a Director, Producer, Writer and Editor of innovative multimedia programs that entertain, educate and inspire action. She has worked for MTV, MaMaMedia Inc., Knowledge Adventure, Davidson and Associates, and Barry Howard Interpretive Design. Her body of work includes online communities, websites, video games, creativity tools, interactive learning programs, broadband video shows, CD-ROMs, mobile phone applications, print products, and museum exhibits. She holds a M.Ed. in Instructional Technology from the University of Virginia, and a BA in Journalism and History from the University of Southern California.

   
 

AMBER OLIVER: MANAGER OF PARTNERSHIPS AND OPERATIONS
As Manager of partnerships and Operations, Amber is responsible for identifying and managing in-country partnerships with youth associations, local experts and institutions. She makes initial contact and provides primary support to new participant countries and communities. She also focuses on scaling up the use of Globaloria and MyGLife within and between countries in order to develop and nurture a vibrant and sustainable global social network. Amber comes to the program from UNICEF, where she managed the organization’s interactive youth portal, Voices of Youth. During her 13+ year career in international development, she has also worked for the United Nations, The World Bank, and for organizations in Bangladesh, India, Senegal and other developing nations. She holds a master’s degree in International Affairs from Columbia University and a BA from Brown University.

   
 

REBECCA REYNOLDS: DIRECTOR OF RESEARCH
As Director of Research, Rebecca is responsible for establishing the requirements and methodology for measuring the success and impact of the Globaloria program. She helped lead the pilot workshop in Israel in October 2006 and captured participant feedback using video, interviews and surveys. She has created a dynamic online report structure that reflects the program's virtual mission and core values, and continues to build out the foundation's overall research strategy. Rebecca is a final-year fellow and doctoral candidate in Mass Communications at the Newhouse School, Syracuse University, focusing on children's use of technology for learning. Her professional experience includes key roles in product management and interactive marketing for Pearson's FamilyEducation Network, Peoplestreet, and TechTarget. She holds a master's degree from Newhouse in Media Studies, and a BA in Sociology from Tufts University. She will continue on with the Workshop full-time in June of 2007 after receiving her Ph.D.

   
 

TERRENCE GRANNUM: PRODUCER, LEAD WIKI DEVELOPER
As Producer, Terrence writes and conceptualizes specific content offerings for the MyGLife website and Wiki, including activities, tutorials and support pages. He works closely with Design and Programming leads to develop and test site functionalities. In 2006, he also led sessions at the pilot workshop in Israel and continues to be the lead contact with students there. As Lead Wiki Developer, he set up the Wikis, maintains them, and interacts on a daily basis with program participants. Terrence has been an internet design and programming consultant for over six years. He holds a BA in International Relations, Economics and French from Lehigh University.

   
  RICHARD GOEHL: ART DIRECTOR AND LEAD DESIGNER
As Art Director and Lead Illustrator/Designer for Globaloria, Rich is responsible for establishing a design direction that visually conveys the mission of the Globaloria program to world audiences with little or no text. He was the Lead Designer for the MyGLife.org website, establishing the overall style of the site and creating design assets for all activities. Rich has more than 12 years of professional experience as an illustrator, designer and fine artist. He holds a BFA from the Rhode Island School of Design.
   
 

BRIAN JUDY: SENIOR FLASH DEVELOPER, TUTORIALS DEVELOPER
As Senior Flash Developer, Brian created an original Flash application called Sound Toy and donated it to MyGLife.org. He continues to contribute to the site by updating and donating other activities in Flash. As Tutorials Developer, Brian creates custom tutorials to go with both the applications he coded and other activities. He also leads technical efforts to improve and expand the tutorials and learning content on MyGLife.org. Brian owns his own Web Design and Development company called Red Aphid. As a visiting faculty at the American University in Washington DC, Brian is also implementing a pilot of Globaloria in his “Introduction to Gaming” course and assessing how MyGLife.org can be used at the university level. He has 20 years experience in computer development, website development and design for companies such as AOL, Sierra Online and Viacom Interactive. He holds an MFA in Art and Technology from The School of the Art Institute of Chicago and a BS in Computer Science from the University of Maryland.

   
  ERNESTO SANTOS: INFORMATION/DATABASE ARCHITECT, LEAD WEB DEVELOPER
As Information/Database Architect, Ernesto developed the site framework and back-end systems to support MyGLife.org in English and a wide variety of other languages. He also authored a set of administrative tools. As Lead Web Developer, he wrote the HTML templates for both the front and back-end web pages, and provides technical support for Wiki issues. Ernesto also wrote MyGLife’s HTML tutorials. Ernesto has taught Flash and Internet Design classes at Brooklyn College, and has worked for Scholastic Software and Bear Stearns. He co-founded an Internet startup, Monkeydreams LLC, in the late 1990s. He holds a BA in Philosophy and Art from Brooklyn College.
   
 

MATT SLAYBAUGH: FLASH DEVELOPER, TUTORIALS DEVELOPER
As Flash Developer, Matt created an original Flash application called Fly Catcher and donated it to MyGLife.org and updates other donated activities on a regular basis. As Tutorials Developer, Matt creates custom tutorials to go with the applications he codes and with other donated activities. This includes writing a set of JavaScript tutorials and helping to create a program of “Weekly Flash Workouts” that participants use to teach themselves Flash. Matt has developed online content for PC Magazine, Jupiter Media and the United Nations. He has taught at NYU and his first textbook, "Professional Web Graphics" was published in 2001. He holds a BA in Film and Psychology from Cornell University.

   
 

MICHAEL DE LA PENA: TECHNICAL DIRECTOR (2006), FLASH DEVELOPER
As Technical Director, Michael created the original technical plan for MyGLife.org. He provided technical supervision and support to developers on the team and made recommendations on Flash development issues and the technical structure of the website. During the 2006 launch of MyGLife.org, Michael led onsite workshops for the pilot group in Israel. As Flash Developer, he authored several Flash tutorials and writes or revises the code for many Flash activities donated to the MyGLife.org website. Michael has 18 years of experience as a journalist, educational writer and a multimedia developer (programming, 3D, video, sound, and graphics). He holds a BA in History from Brandeis University.

   
     
   

BOARD OF DIRECTORS

    IDIT HAREL CAPERTON
Dr. Caperton is the Founder, President and Chairman of the Board of The World Wide Workshop Foundation for Children’s Media Technology & Learning. She serves on Advisory Boards of several for-profit corporations and not-for-profit institutions, and also provides consulting services on the use of technology in learning both nationally and internationally.

THOMAS HEYWOOD
Mr. Heywood is the Assistant Managing Partner at the law firm, Bowles Rice McDavid Graff & Love LLP. Prior to joining a private law firm, Mr. Heywood had many years of public service. Most recently, from 1989 – 1993, he served as the Chief of Staff for then Governor Caperton. Mr. Heywood is a member of the American Bar Association and the West Virginia State Bar Association. He holds a JD degree from Harvard Law School (1982), where he was Editor, Harvard International Law Journal and Editor of the Harvard Law Record. Mr. Heywood also earned a BA from Stanford University with distinction (1978), and is a member of the Phi Beta Kappa Honorary Society. Mr. Heywood provides legal services to the Foundation pro bono.

REBECCA BYAM
Ms. Byam is a member of the PricewaterhouseCoopers Global Capital Management Group where she advises the management of companies raising capital and involved in mergers or acquisitions. In the mid to late 1990s, Ms. Byam was the Chief Financial Officer for two start-up companies, including MaMaMedia Inc. She formerly was associated with Apax Partners, Inc. (formerly Patricof & Co. Ventures, inc.), a $10 billion private equity company that she joined in 1985, and from which she withdrew in 1995. In 1991, she was invited to advise the Investment Advisory Council which was charged with revamping the Small Business Investment Company program of the U.S. Small Business Administration. She has served as a board member for various organizations and companies. She holds a BA from Kenyon College and an MBA from New York University Stern Graduate School of Business. She is a CPA, and a member of the AICPA and New York State Society of CPAs. Ms. Byam provides advice on operating strategy and assists the Foundation in writing its annual report, development plan, and related documents.

   
     
    BOARD OF ADVISORS
   

GASTON CAPERTON
Governor Caperton is the eighth president of the College Board. He is a founding advisor and enthusiastic supporter of his wife's foundation. Since his appointment in 1999, Governor Caperton has transformed the College Board into a resolutely mission-driven, values-oriented organization that takes bold steps to connect greater numbers of students to college success and opportunity while raising educational standards. Improving education is not new for Caperton. As a two-term governor of West Virginia from 1988 to 1996, he developed a comprehensive plan that emphasized the use of computers and technology in the public schools. He has received numerous state and national awards and special recognition, including eight honorary doctoral degrees. He was chair of the Democratic Governors' Association and served on the National Governors Association Executive Committee. He holds several board seats at various organizations and corporations.

DANA WADE
Ms. Wade is the President of SpikeDDB, the premier creative agency that focuses on the urban ethnic market. Under her leadership, the agency has won a number of high-profile accounts, including the NFL, Remy Martin, McDonald’s, NY Metro Coop, Foxwoods Resort Casino, the NY Knicks and Pepsi. Since taking the helm of SpikeDDB five years ago, Ms. Wade has successfully expanded the agency’s client base, improved the company’s profitability, and has raised its reputation to an overall higher level in the industry. While other agencies are busy emptying out their desks, Wade has increased her staffing by 200 percent. Prior to joining SpikeDDB, Ms. Wade led a team working on Citibank’s award-winning global strategic development at Young and Rubicam. In 2003, she was named one of Ad Age’s Women to Watch. In 1999, her MetLife team was acknowledged by Financial Services Marketing Magazine for developing one of the “Top 10 Best Financial Services Advertising Campaigns.” In 1997, she was awarded a National Achiever in Industry Award by Young and Rubicam and the Harlem YMCA. During her tenure at McCann-Erickson/Los Angeles, Wade was responsible for the introduction of the award-winning Nestle Sweet Success campaign. Ms. Wade holds a BS in journalism from the University of Oregon.

THOMAS W. MALONE
Dr. Malone, Patrick J. McGovern Professor of Management at the MIT Sloan School of Management, is the founding director of the MIT Center for Collective Intelligence and author of the critically acclaimed book The Future of Work. He was also the founding director of the MIT Center for Coordination Science and one of the two founding co-directors of the MIT Initiative on "Inventing the Organizations of the 21st Century. Dr. Malone co-founded three software companies. He consults and serves as a board member for a number of organizations. Before joining the MIT faculty in 1983, Malone was a research scientist at the Xerox Palo Alto Research Center (PARC) where his research involved designing educational software and office information systems. His background includes a PhD and two master’s degrees from Stanford University, a BA (magna cum laude) from Rice University, and degrees in applied mathematics, engineering-economic systems, and psychology.

SEYMOUR PAPERT
Dr. Papert is a leader in Constructionist educational theory. He serves as an advisor to various organizations, including the One Laptop Per Child Association (OLPC) and MaMaMedia, Inc. A mathematician by training, Dr. Papert was a pioneer of artificial intelligence. He is internationally recognized as the seminal thinker regarding computers and pedagogy for children. His collaboration with Jean Piaget at the University of Geneva led him to consider using mathematics to help understand how children can learn and think. In the early 1960s, Papert came to MIT, where, with Marvin Minsky, he co-founded the Artificial Intelligence Lab in the late 60’s and co-authored their seminal work Perceptrons. It was in his laboratory at the AI Lab that children first had the chance to use the computer to write and to make graphics. The Logo programming language was created there, as were the first children's toys with built-in computation. With Nicholas Negroponte he co-founded the MIT Media Lab in 1985. With former Governor of Maine, Angus King, he worked on the Maine Learning Technology Initiative, a program that provided a laptop for every middle-school student in Maine. He is the author of Mindstorms: Children, Computers, and Powerful Ideas (1980); The Children's Machine: Rethinking School in the Age of the Computer (1993); and The Connected Family: Bridging the Digital Generation Gap (1996). Papert co-authored several articles with Dr. Idit Harel Caperton, including the book Constructionism (1991) and contributed a series of essays on MaMaMedia.com called 21st Century Learning (1996-2002).
